The technology

The technology behind Argenta controlled-release capsules

A controlled-release capsule (CRC) is an orally administered therapeutic delivery device engineered specifically for ruminant animals. Dosed using an applicator, the device resides in the animal's rumen where it delivers a consistent, controlled release of API.
‍
To ensure consistent delivery, three components work together:

Why choose Argenta's CRC technology

One dose. Zero compromiseson consistency.

Unlike conventional dosing methods, CRCs deliver API at a constant, zero-order rate for the full dosing period. Studies have demonstrated minimal variability in therapeutic payout across 343 days, providing livestock farmers with the confidence that every animal in a herd is receiving the right dose at the right time.

For intensive farming operations and pasture-grazing livestock, where repeated medication administration is a major logistical challenge, the one-shot nature of CRCs reduces the need to round up and handle animals to just once or twice per year, saving significant time, cost, and inconvenience.

Multi-API deliveryand pulse-release precision

CRCs can be engineered with a pulse-release system, enabling time-targeted treatments throughout the year from a single device. By alternating blank (excipient-only) and active (API-containing) tablets within the product core, developers can deliver drug combinations, build in washout periods, or administer multiple APIs on different timelines.

This flexibility makes CRCs particularly valuable for parasite control programmes, combination therapy protocols, and any indication requiring precise, sequential dosing over an extended period.

CRC manufacturing: From lab to commercial scale

Centre of excellence for CRCs

We manufacture controlled-release intraruminal capsules at our EMA- and FDA-approved GMP facility in Auckland, New Zealand — home to unique gel-former technology, dedicated production lines, and end-to-end support from lab scale through to commercial supply.

Our CRC products are manufactured at both lab and production scales, with automated assembly capabilities and granules produced in a range of sizes to precisely tailor API release profiles to your therapeutic goals.

FAQs

What is a controlled-release intraruminal capsule?
A controlled-release intraruminal capsule (CRC) is an orally administered therapeutic delivery device for ruminant animals. Dosed with an applicator, it resides in the rumen to deliver consistent, controlled API release for up to 343 days from a single administration.
How does a controlled-release drug delivery system work in ruminants?
The CRC's product core of stacked tablets hydrates and gels on contact with rumen contents, triggering API release. A piston system coordinates with the hydrating core to control the rate of extrusion, ensuring consistent zero-order delivery. Retaining wings keep the device in situ and prevent regurgitation.
Which ruminant species are CRCs suitable for?
Argenta's CRCs are designed for cattle and sheep, with four capsule sizes covering animals from 20kg lambs through to 800kg cattle. Each size is engineered to suit the unique gastrointestinal physiology of the target species.
Can one CRC deliver multiple APIs?
Yes. CRCs can be engineered with a pulse-release system by alternating blank and active tablets in the product core. This enables delivery of multiple APIs, time-targeted treatments, or washout periods, all from a single administration.
What therapeutic applications are CRCs suited to?
CRCs are well-suited to long-term parasite control, vitamin and mineral supplementation, rumen fermentation modification, and any indication requiring consistent, extended API release in ruminants. The pulse-release capability also makes them valuable for combination therapy and sequential treatment protocols.
Is Argenta's CRC technology commercially proven?
Yes. Argenta's CRC technology and formulations are commercially proven and in use across four continents, with a dedicated regulatory team experienced in food-producing animal health and a track record of successful market authorisations.
